WEEK 5: King David

Keep the Faith…God Can Still Use You!

Week 5: King David

Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 16:7-13 & 2 Samuel 12:7-9, 13

Hey kids! We are on the last week of our series. Last week we learned about Samson; a man God was going to use for His holy purpose in helping free Israel from the Philistines. He made some bad decisions because he allowed his wants and needs to be more important that what God wanted. Yet, God used him to bring down the Philistine leaders and 3,000 Philistine people with his God-given strength.

This week, we will be learning about King David. I’m sure you know some things about King David. He was one of the greatest men in the Old Testament. When we hear his name, some may think shepherd, poet, giant-killer, in the bloodline of Christ Jesus. Though he was all these things, he was a liar, murderer, betrayer. However, above all the bad, David was remembered for his heart for God.

Acts 13:22 says, “…’I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart, he will do everything I want him to do.’”

David’s story is found in 1 Samuel 16-1 Kings 2. He’s also mentioned all throughout the New Testament.

Discussion Questions:
Read 1 Samuel 16:7-13
1.   What was God looking for? (Verse 7)
2.  Why do you think He choose David? (God didn’t care about what the man looked like (is he tall, strong, etc.) God looked at the HEART)

Read 2 Samuel 12:7-9, 13
3.  What did King David do that angered God and had the prophet Nathan correct him? (David had one of his soldiers and good friend Uriah killed and stole his wife)
4.  Did David get angry at God? (NO) What did David do? (He admitted that he has sinned against God)
5.  Forgiveness…Nathan told David that the Lord had forgiven him. Why is it important for us to forgive?

Main Point:
King David was Israel’s greatest King. He was in the bloodline of Jesus. He was a man after God’s own heart. What does that mean? He wanted what God wanted. We went where God needed him to go. He asked the Lord which path to take and which direction to go. He wanted God’s guidance. However, David, just like us made some mistakes. David realized his sin (with help from the prophet Nathan) and was quick to admit that what he did was wrong. God did forgive David because his heart was broken by what he did.

Conclusion:
We all make mistakes. King David; Israel’s greatest King betrayed his friend Uriah and had him killed then stole his wife. God forgave Him because he admitted from the heart that what he did was wrong. His heart above all was still focused on God and wanting what God wanted.

Focus our heart on Him and ask God to help change what you want to what God wants. To do this, make sure you take time to really know who God is and what He wants for us as His children.
-    Pray to Him
-    Read Your Bible
-    Worship God

God, please change my heart so it matches yours. I want what you want.
**Even though David made mistakes and sinned against God, his faith, and his heart for God was still bigger and greater than his sin.

Application:
1.   Find a Bible verse to help you in times of doubt or when you’re having a hard time trusting God. Memorize it!
I want to see pictures of what you decided to do with your memory verses! Email them to me please (jena@faithe.org)

2.  God loved David and even though David made mistakes God still used him in Israel. Just like David, no matter how many mistakes you make, if you continue to seek God He will use you too! How do you think God wants to use you right now?

**Write or draw a picture of 3 things you think you are really great at. (Some ideas could be: making friends, music, basketball, writing, art, being kind, LEGOs…) Now, draw or write a way that God could use what you are good at to show Jesus to those around you and practice them this week!

WEEK 4: Samson

Keep the Faith…God Can Still Use You!

Week 4: Samson

Bible Reading: Judges 16:17-30

Hey kids! We are on week 4 of our series. Last week I talked about Gideon; one of Israel’s judges…but he was scared that he didn’t have what it took to beat the Midianites and that made him question God.

This week, we will be learning about Samson; a man God was going to use for His holy purpose in helping free Israel from the Philistines. However, Samson made some bad decisions based on what he wanted…not what God wanted and needed him to do. That led to Samson losing all his mighty, God-given strength. Though he lost his strength, God had a plan and still used Samson in mighty ways and even gave back his strength due to his faith.

Samson’s story is found in Judges 13-16

Discussion Questions:
Read Judges 6:17-30
1.   Based on the first couple verses, who was Samson?
2.  Why was he NOT supposed to cut his long hair? What would happen?
3.  What did Delilah want so bad that she had Samson’s hair cut off? (Money)
4.  This may be a harder question…What was Samson doing that God did not want him to do? (He was allowing his own wants to take over and forgot what God created him to do)
5.  Read Judges 16:20-30. What happened to Samson at the end of this Bible reading that showed us God still used him even though he made terrible mistakes?
·      What did Samson do in verse 28? (His faith in God was seen through prayer)

Main Point:
Samson was made for an amazing purpose. God was going to use him to help free Israel from the Philistines. However, Samson lost sight of what God wanted and he started to live his life based on the things he wanted. He also used the gifts and skills God blessed him with unwisely. He disobeyed God and told his secret to Delilah about what would happen if he cut his hair. After Samson lost his strength and his eyes, he turned back to God and with great faith and his God-given strength, brought down the temple on the Philistine leaders and people.

**We all make mistakes; some mistakes are bigger than others. However, God has a plan and purpose for each of us just as He had a great plan for Samson. Keep growing your faith in the Lord and that will help you in keeping your eyes on what God wants. How can we do that?
-    Pray often
-    Read His Word
-    Worship God
-    Be thankful even during the hard times

Conclusion:
Like you and I, Samson disobeyed God and made some mistakes during his time as Israel’s judge. He allowed his wants to control him and forgot about what God wanted him to do and used his gifts God gave him unwisely.
**Even though Samson made mistakes and disobeyed, his faith was seen when finally looked to God and did what He wanted him to do; help free Israel from the Philistines.

Application:
1.   I want all of you to find a Bible verse, or maybe you already have one to help you in times of doubt or when you’re having a hard time trusting God. Memorize it!
I will be needing this later this month! ;)

2.  We just sang about the overwhelming, never-ending, love of God that chases us down and longs for us to be near even when we don’t deserve it. Can you think of a time you did something you weren’t proud of? Maybe lied? Yelled at your mom? Were you mean to a friend?  Draw it…. then take a red crayon or marker and draw and color in such a big heart over it that you can’t even see what you drew before.  THIS is the power of God’s love for you! Just like God gave Samson the power to overcome his sin, He also gave it you through Jesus!  God’s love covers your sin and He will always be there to pick you up when you fall. Don’t forget it!

WEEK 3: Gideon

Keep the Faith…God Can Still Use You!

Week 3: Gideon

Bible Reading: Judges 6:12-17, 36-40; 7:19-21

Hey kids! We are on week 3 of our series. I talked about Sarah the first week and talked about her questioning God’s promise to her, last week we talked about Rahab and how she made bad choices in life, her faith was greater and God used her to help the Israelites take control of the Promised Land.

This week, we will be talking about Gideon. Gideon was one of Israel’s judges…but he was scared and that made him question God.

Gideon’s story is found in Judges 6-8.

Discussion Questions:
Read Judges 6:12-17, 36-40; 7: 19-21
1.   What things was Gideon afraid of?
2.  What things did Gideon ask God to do to show him that He was with the Israelites?
3.  What are some things that scare you?
4.  When you’re scared, what can you do?
5.  Gideon had faith and finally obeyed God. What great thing did God help Gideon do?

Main Point:
Gideon was afraid that he didn’t have the skills and ability to beat the Midianites. He asked God to show him signs that God will save Israel and will be with him when the fight.

**Don’t let the fear of not being enough or the fear of failing at something keep you from all God wants you to do. Obey Him, have faith that He will help you because He will use the things (skills & abilities) He has given you to do His plan.

Conclusion:
Like you and I, Gideon was afraid. He thought that he didn’t have what it took to beat Israel’s enemy; the Midianites…
**It took some time for God to show Gideon that He was with Him and would help him defeat the Midianites. Gideon finally had the faith to do as God told him, and he did it well. Gideon was a servant of God and God used him in great ways.

Application:
1.   I want all of you to find a Bible verse, or maybe you already have one to help you in times of doubt or when you’re having a hard time trusting God. Memorize it!
I will be needing this later this month! ;)

2.  We just sang the song “You Make Me Brave” and it has a line in it that says: You make me brave, you call me from the shore into the waves”. I want you to think of something that God is calling you to do, or that he has called you to do in the past and draw a picture of it.  It could be anything like: making a new friend, saying you’re sorry, or praying in a public place (park, restaurant, etc.). As you draw this picture I want you to realize that God is always with you and His love, His Word can give you courage in your life to show Christ to others.
